When Love Comes - It Comes
Hard!
by Tallulah Givehead
L'il ol' me was just a bit tired of all those French
films (not to mention
The Quintology of Terror) When Love Comes
is a great little film out of New Zealand (Love
those accents!) directed by
Garth Maxwell who was also responsible for
"Jack Be Nimble."
When Love Comes is an intensely
interwoven story of a pair of lesbian rockers,
drummer Fig (Nancy
Brunning) and singer
Sally
(Sophia
Hawthorne), a former pop diva named Katie Keane
(Rena
Owen), an irresistibly cute but emotionally
strung out songwriter, Mark (Dean
O'Gorman), and insanely gorgeous Stephen (Simon
Prast) as Mark's frustrated boyfriend and
long-time friend of Katie.
Whilst Fig and Sally's relationship seems ... um ...
stable? the love stories between Stephen and Mark,
and Katie and her LA-based boyfriend, Eddie (Simon
Westaway) are complex, rocky, and complicated by
the lives they lead. It's kind of like real life!
Rena Owen and Dean O'Gorman do a fantastic job of
expressing their tortured inner selves, Rena's
emotions are more deeply expressed. Hotty Simon
Prast is a bit distant but that somehow reflects the
personality of his character. Did Ah mention this
mayun is gorgeous?
Other than suffering a bit from Americanitis (all
story plots wrapped up in a happy ending) and the
useless intrusion of "video diary cut-ins"
When Love Comes has great acting, two
cute leads for the guys and sweet girls for the
ladies, with a plot twist or two thrown in for good
measure, this is a must see film.
