Stonewall
Ah must first say that you MUST click the links and buy “Stonewall” title IMMEDIATELY. Not only is the film filled with Fabulousness - much like myself! - it is a dramatic and stirring tale about the most momentous moment (hmmm) in homosexual history!
Far from being a dry, fictionalized account of the people involved in the 1969 Stonewall Riots, this adaptation of Martin Duberman’s book is instead a rollicking musical drama that successfully blends gay history and queer fabulousness to wonderful effect.
This what-might-have-been-happening on the days before that fateful summer night’s tale features Matty Dean ( Fred Weller), a studly country boy who arrives in New York City and almost immediately becomes involved with a rambunctious group of black, white and Latino drag queens. He becomes romantically involved with one particular diva, La Miranda played with rare depth by Guillermo Diaz, a saucy and hopelessly romantic drag queen. A passionate, spirited tale — torn from gay history — that is alternately funny, touching, upsetting and even a bit educational.
In 1969, some marched for peace. Some marched for equality. They all marched for love. *sniff* Just fabulous.
