Religion has long played an important role in the LGBT community, whether it was as a negative or a positive impact. One such must see lesbian film that has religious tones all throughout the movie is Damned if You Don’t. This movie, which is brilliant in its cinematography tones of black and white shots, was filmed two decades ago in 1987.

The main theme of the movie is based on a nun, as portrayed by Peggy Healey, and her livelihood in the convent. As many people know, nuns can not be sexually active, and must refrain from sexual tendencies as a part of worshiping God as well as giving respect to the church. Many nuns Read the rest of this review »

The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley, written and superbly directed by Anthony Minghella, recalls the visual splendor and fervent characterizations of his award-winning The English Patient. Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (whose “Strangers on a Train” was adapted by Hitchcock), and filmed once before in 1960 as Purple Noon, this devious exercise in deception is a twisted little tale much like its young hero — handsome trappings masking more sinister intent.

All pouty and lean, Matt Damon is excellent as Tom Ripley, a sociopath who accepts a job from a shipping magnate to try to convince his wastrel son Dickie (Jude Law), who is living it up (and often shirtless!) in Italy, Read the rest of this review »

Drift

A well-acted, experimental film, Drift tells the story of Ryan and Joel from three different perspectives. But poor, l’il ol’ me just got the worst case of claustraphobia from watching this otherwise great movie. Filmed almost entirely in close-ups and OTS (over-the-shoulder) shots Ah was dyin’ for a few wide shots to break up the monotony. Now, Ta knows the constraints of DV and a small budget, but this was a bit much.

This audacious first solo directed feature film from Quentin Lee (Ethan Mao, Flow, Shopping for Fangs) tells the tale of a love triangle with three possibilities. Ryan (Reggie Lee) a young Asian-American screenwriter/waiter has been in a relationship with Joel (Greyson Dane) for three years. Read the rest of this review »

The Fluffer

The Fluffer is a gripping and sexy fictional drama that manages to expose the nasty underbelly of the gay porn business while illustrating its allure. Ta thought that she’d certainly be titillated bah the purported underbelly of porn. Hah!

The Fluffer is Wash West’s first non-adult film and a tale of obsession. Sean McGinnis (Michael Cunio) has been renting the classics and by error gets Citizen Cum instead of Citizen Kane. So starts a tale of sexual obsession that changes the course of Sean’s life and brings great drama to the screen. The star of Citizen Cum is Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney) a hot “gay for pay” porn Read the rest of this review »

Eating Out

Eating Out is a screwball comedy harkens back to the days of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (who may be turning over in their respective graves with that comparison) as a hunky straight guy pretends he’s gay to get a date with a woman who only likes to hang out with gay men.

Caleb, played by hunky Scott Lunsford, just wants to meet a nice girl now after a bad experience. He goes to a party with his gay best friend and roommate Kyle (the adorable Jim Verraros of “American Idol” fame.) and spies Gwen (Emily Brook Hands) as she throws her latest gay boyfriend out of the Read the rest of this review »

In reality, coming out to y’alls family is scary and rife with Drama (Yes. “Drama” with a capital “D!”). In the movies, this event is more often filled with mis-understandings and laughter … especially when the family is completely in the dark. Me? My Momma always knew and Papa simply said nothing … Ah was so ready for nasty drama that it was a total let down! I knew Ah should wore mah best dress!

Ah think mah favorite gay movie of ALL TIME must be The Wedding Banquet - as much for it’s handsome lead actors Winston Chao (ooooooo … Ah have such a thing for Asian boys!) and Mitchell Lichtenstein Read the rest of this review »

Sweet l’il Elmo hayuz inspired me to review a few films about coming out. Yes. Ah know, it’s late and Ah should hayuv done this on the 11th … but Ta hayuz been so busy.

Today Ah will start with a cute movie “Edge of Seventeen.” Called “The wisest, most thoughtful American film about queer youth to come along in ages…” bah the LA Weekly “Edge of Seventeen.” is as much a travelogue of early eighties life as it is about lead character, Eric’s (played with deadpan earnestness by Chris Stafford - Who hayuz not been in the acting scene since 2002) coming out.

A Touch of Pink

Another very similarly-themed (Wedding Baquet) movie that Ah enjoyed is the much-more-recent Touch of Pink, Alim (Jimi Mistry) is a South Asian-Canadian gay man living in London with his handsome boyfriend Giles (Kristen Holden-Reid).

All hell breaks loose for the cross-cultural couple when Alim’s traditional mother Nuru (a scenery-chewing Suleka Mathews) announces a visit, setting off a frantic Wedding Banquet-esque series of events, from hiding all gay paraphernalia to having Giles’ sister pose as Alim’s fiance. Endgame

Ah thought Ah would love this Brit film called “Endgame”. It hayuz all the elements - “Official Selection” status from the Philly Gay & Lesbian Film Fest, a stunningly handsome boy, and the edgy darkness of a thriller.

“Endgame” stars Daniel Newman (oooo the English accent, the pouty lips, the body of Apollo! Ah’m in LOVE!) as Tom, a rent boy who is kept by the dashingly evil - and vile - George Norris (Mark McGann), a sado-masochistic gangster. Tom is kept in high style in a London flat filled with pop art and a bedroom set up, not only for sex, but also for blackmail with a hidden camera focused on the red silk bedsheets. Tom is being sucked down into a nasty scheme Read the rest of this review »
